A few weeks ago Android got an excellent application that allowed you to send links from your desktop browser to your phone. This is excellent for people who like to read on the go. It actually made me wish for a similar BlackBerry application. Epic Applications heard that plea. The developer has recently released its own application, Home to Phone, which works in a similar manner as the Android app Chrome to Phone, only it includes a few more features that might prove useful. It’s definitely an app for commuters who might have to save the bulk of their reading for the bus and train rides to and from work.

There are two bits you’ll need to download for this app to work properly. First is the BlackBerry app, and second is either the WIndows destkop app or the browser extension. I highly recommend the browser extension. It currently works with Firefox; the Chrome version is in beta. Once you install the extension you’ll then set it up, entering the device PIN. That will allow Home to Phone to send you links and phone numbers using push. You also need to enter your passcode if you choose to enable one on the device app.

Once you download the BlackBerry app you’ll go into the application’s options, which can be found in a submenu of the Options screen. Click the Enabled box so you can utilize push. This is also where you can set your passcode. Only Home to Phone links containing the correct passcode will reach your device. Then you have a choice of how to receive the links. You can choose auto-pop, which will instantly open the link in your browser. You can also choose to have the links appear in your messages app for future clicking.

I’ve enjoyed the backward feature of Home to Phone. Sometimes I’ll open a page on my BlackBerry that is not optimized for mobile browsing. This can be overcome in some cases, but in others it’s a complete pain to read on my BlackBerry. With Home to Phone you can send the page right to your browser, so you can view it with the proper display. Another feature that Epic Applications plays up is the ability to send phone numbers from your desktop to your BlackBerry for one-click calling. It’s a nice little bonus for this app.

You can get Home to Phone for a temporarily reduced price of $2.99. Then you can get the Firefox extension, Chrome extension, or the Windows app — WARNING: these links will automatically download the file. But here’s what I’d do. I’d go to http://tinyurl.com/hometophone from my BlackBerry browser and get the free trial. That gives you three link sends. Then, if I found it convenient, then I’d go to the BBGeeks Store and download the full version. But that’s just me.
