An iPad Riddle: Why Does Apple Love Magazines but Hate Subscriptions?

Back when Steve Jobs was making the rounds lining up partners and building hype for an Apple tablet, one of his special focuses was magazine publishers. He told them, just as he did to the big newspapers, that tablet versions of their issues sold via Apple would save the industry…and buy and large they believed him.

Major publishers like Time Inc and Conde Nast signed on and have been working hard to produce digital versions of their flagship titles (which Apple spends a lot of time crowing about), available for purchase issue by issue in the App store…however all is not well. Apple’s attitude towards traditional magazine sales models is confusing publishers like Time, and making them wonder what they may have gotten into.
